Established in 1960 and incorporated in 1968, our RC Modeling Club is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to advancing the hobby of model aviation. Our mission extends beyond the skies, as we actively give back to the community through initiatives such as Builder's Workshops, charitable fundraising, and other various outreach programs.

Our club holds several events throughout the flying season with our most important being our annual AirFest event, which has raised over $60,000 in donations to charitable organizations throughout the years.

With over 120 members, the Flying Electrons is a trmendous resource for the RC hobbyist. We offer helpful advice and support for your RC hobby needs with advice on aircraft, where to get great deals on supplies, and a flight training program that's second to none.

FAA Approved RC Flying Site

Our flying site is a premier location for aircraft enthusiasts, offering one mile of dedicated FRIA airspace where members can enjoy flying without the need for Remote ID. The site features a large, well-appointed landing field, ensuring plenty of room for takeoffs and landings, and is accessible to members year-round.

Whether you're a seasoned pilot or a newcomer, our site provides the perfect environment for a safe and enjoyable flying experience.

What We Fly

At our airfield, we fly a diverse range of aircraft, including fixed-wing planes, helicopters, and rotary drones. From small ready-to-fly models to impressive giant-scale Warbirds and 3D aerobatic planes, there’s something for every enthusiast.

To ensure safety and enjoyment for all, we have designated areas for each type of craft, allowing pilots to focus on their skills while respecting others in the airspace.

Safety First!

Safety is our top priority at the airfield. We are fully equipped with fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, and an AED to ensure we’re prepared for any situation.

Our field rules emphasize safe and courteous flying, creating a secure and enjoyable environment for everyone. The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) includes a specific list of safety guidelines which we adhere to.

An FAA FRIA (FAA-Recognized Identification Area) is a designated location where recreational RC aircraft and drones can be flown without Remote ID.

What is Remote ID for RC Aircraft?

Remote ID is a regulation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that requires that hobbyists install a device in their drones and RC aircraft to broadcast identification and location information during flight. It acts like a "digital license plate" for drones, enhancing airspace safety and accountability.

Failure to comply with Remote ID regulations could result in penalties and even fines of up to $27,500. Most RC aircraft manufacturers are beginning to include Remote ID devices with newer model designs.

How Does Being a FRIA Affect Remote ID Regulations?

1. Exemption from Remote ID – Normally, RC aircraft and drones must have Remote Identification (Remote ID) capabilities. However, within a FRIA airfield location, these craft can fly without transmitting Remote ID signals. The Flying Electrons Airfield has been designated as a FRIA flying site.

2. Eligibility – Only certain organizations, like FAA-recognized community-based organizations (CBOs) (e.g., the Academy of Model Aeronautics) and educational institutions, can apply for FRIA status.

3. Fixed Locations – FRIA designations are specific to a geographic area and do not move. Pilots must be physically located within the FRIA while operating their drones and maintain line-of-site control of their craft at all times.

4. Application Process – Eligible organizations can apply to the FAA to designate an area as a FRIA. Individual RC aircraft and drone operators CANNOT apply on their own.

5. Recreational Use Only – FRIAs are primarily intended for recreational drone flying, not for commercial drone operations.

Why FRIA Matters:

• FRIA flying sites have met special criteria set by the FAA which assures safe and responsible flight. This designated status allows model aircraft and drone enthusiasts to enjoy the hobby without needing costly Remote ID upgrades.

A model aircraft is a non-human-carrying device capable of sustained flight within visual line of sight of the pilot or spotter(s). It may not exceed limitations of this code and is intended exclusively for sport, recreation, education and/or competition. All model flights must be conducted in accordance with this safety code and related AMA guidelines, any additional rules specific to the flying site, as well as all applicable laws and regulations.

All Electrons & AMA members, must agree to the following:

• I will not fly a model aircraft in a careless or reckless manner.

• I will not interfere with and will yield the right of way to all human-carrying aircraft using AMA’s See and Avoid Guidance and a spotter when appropriate.

• I will not operate any model aircraft while I am under the influence of alcohol or any drug that could adversely affect my ability to safely control the model.

• I will avoid flying directly over unprotected people, moving vehicles, and occupied structures.

• I will fly Free Flight (FF) and Control Line (CL) models in compliance with AMA’s safety programming.

• I will maintain visual contact of an RC model aircraft without enhancement other than corrective lenses prescribed to me. When using an advanced flight system, such as an autopilot, or flying First-Person View (FPV), I will comply with AMA’s Advanced Flight System programming.

• I will only fly models weighing more than 55 pounds, including fuel, if certified through AMA’s Large Model Airplane Program.

• I will only fly a turbine-powered model aircraft in compliance with AMA’s Gas Turbine Program.

• I will not fly a powered model outdoors closer than 25 feet to any individual, except for myself or my helper(s) located at the flight line, unless I am taking off and landing, or as otherwise provided in AMA’s Competition Regulation.

• I will use an established safety line to separate all model aircraft operations from spectators and bystanders.
